Shopify Announces 10% Layoffs of ‘Teammates’

Shopify CEO Tabi Lutke announced on July 26, 2022 (on a Tuesday) that it has become necessary to layoff what will be 10% of ‘Teammates’.

As ‘Tabi’ (as the letter is signed) mentions in the company newsletter:

“…the next part of the journey will involve fewer teammates… Shopify has to go through a reduction in workforce that will see about 10% leave by the end of the day. Most of the impacted roles are in recruiting, support, and sales, and across the company we’re also eliminating over-specialized and duplicate roles, as well as some groups that were convenient to have but too far removed from building products.”

I am always amazed at the selection of words these BIG COMPANY CEO’s use in their attempt to soften the blow of ‘unemployment’ and keeping from saying ‘you’re fired’.

At least they are moving away from referring to us as ‘part of the family’ and moving towards ‘teammates’.
