A fascinating story for sure.
Rex Heuermann is the ‘alleged’ Gilgo Beach killer, and some anonymous Seller was trying to auction off a vintage 1972 Jeep AMC owned by Rex, the alleged killer.
In an attempt to draw attention to the auction listing, the anonymous Seller was using the notoriety of the alleged killer to add value to the auction, by repeatedly referencing Heuermann, the alleged serial killer, and the listing was deemed impermissible under eBay rules.
Apparently, the listing violated eBay’s ‘Violence and Violent Criminals’ policy.
There is a community of collectors out there somewhere, (hopefully not near me) that are involved in collecting what is known as ‘murderabilia’, which are collectibles tied to violent criminals.
There is not much information of the size of this community but from the looks of it, it’s not very large, (thank goodness).
I personally enjoy watching episodes of Forensic Files and all, but I don’t think that I want anything connected to a crime as part of any collection in my house, but that’s just me.
Anyhow, it appears that the auction was taken down due to eBay’s policy.
My point here is, though there is value in selling on eBay and can be very profitable, (as I sell on eBay myself) as an affiliate marketer, you don’t have to concern yourself too much with these type of policies.
Imagine if you were the owner of this Jeep, and your listing got taken down, now you are stuck with an old Jeep and not much of a market to sell too, not to mention the loss of money that it cost you to acquire this Jeep.
As an affiliate marketer for this type of product, or any other type of product, if the listing were to be taken down on eBay, or on any other platform, or if the item was discontinued, or if the item was recalled, you would simply drop the link and link to something else.
As an affiliate marketer, you may ‘lose’ a few minutes of your time, but you would not lose a bag of money.
If you were selling things on eBay or on your own website (as I do), you could use affiliate marketing as part of your strategy to gather certain data points, and test ‘market demand’ for certain products you are considering adding to your inventory, BEFORE you invested ‘real dollars’ into a bulk purchase of an item for you to resell, all the while, making a little bit of money through your affiliate links.
Affiliate marketing employs powerful principles that convert online traffic into ‘ready-to-buy’ customers.
